A member of the HSBC Bank Australia Limited Executive Committee Steve Hughes is responsible for HSBC’s corporate and institutional Banking business across Australia and New Zealand with teams in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Auckland and Wellington. The Banking team supports Australian and New Zealand corporates and institutions access HSBC’s local and extensive international network across a wide product range spanning cash management and trade finance, FX and rates management and debt financing including leverage and acquisition finance, real estate & infrastructure finance and debt capital markets. The Banking team also supports our international clients in the Australian and New Zealand markets.

Steve joined HSBC in March 2015 and was appointed Head of Commercial Banking Australia in 2016 before being appointed Head of wholesale Banking for Australia and New Zealand in January 2023. Prior to HSBC Steve was at The Royal Bank of Scotland (“RBS”) where he gained more than 20 years of experience in international banking in both relationship and product roles. Steve held a number of senior positions at RBS firstly in London before re-locating to Australia and heading the banks Asia Pacific loan market team and then running corporate debt capital markets and corporate coverage teams in Australia. Steve graduated from The University of Leeds where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree, with Honors in Economics and Mathematics.
